Welcome! You Bulldogsā¦
As we are drawn into the second full week of this new Fall 2008 semester, some of us are finally falling into the patterns presented to us.
As the International page editor, and on behalf of The Collegian, I would like to welcome all new and transfer students to SC State and the Bulldog family.
The Collegian staff hopes that you find your tenure at SC State the most rewarding and successful time of your life thus far.
Grab and make use of positive opportunities as they are thrown at you.
Yes, some things are different and you may have to respond to challenges and make individual decisions on your own for the first time, but college is just a little taste of what the outside world offers.
For both American and International students, some of you may not have even traveled outside of your state or country before attending college. SC State offers diversity that another university may not have; take advantage of that.
The presence of the large International student body should be used to your advantage. This is your chance to learn and accept another culture, so that you can acclimatize to the global society developing around you.
Keep an open mind to the differences that are presented for example the different accents used. Ask about the food these students are accustomed to and probe to find out more about their culture.
With the recently concluded Olympics in Beijing, China, more people have a open mind about the rest of the world. One way of getting to know each other is by attending "Meet and Greets" organized on campus.
We know book prices are exorbitant to say the least, but your professors are right; the books are needed to pass your classes. Ensure that you get a textbook. If you do not have enough money to get it from the bookstore (which some professors admit is expensive), try to make some friends in your major who are upperclassmen so you can get books from them, this or next semester.
Again The Collegian welcomes you to the Bulldog family and we hope that you have the time of your life!
