Are scholarships being cut? If so, who will be affected? What can the students and alumni do about it?
Scholarships are not being cut yet, according to Student Government Association President, Whitney McCrea. With the economy being in such a downfall and state-wide budget cuts affecting SC State's, scholarships being cut is somewhat inevitable.
McCrea has thought about this possibility and has come up with a proposal called "Funding our Education-SCSU Style" to help. The SGA is encouraging students give money to collectively donate a lump sum of $10,000 to the university for need based scholarships.
"With the economy being like it is, it only makes sense that eventually money might be pulled from scholarships," said McCrea. "This is just something to prevent that from happening."
McCrea, along with all SGA officers, plan to just start asking for donations from both students and alumni.
After doing the math McCrea came up with the figure $2.08. That is the amount of money each student currently enrolled in SC State would have to donate in order to raise $10,000. That $10,000 will then be donated towards SC State's need-based scholarships.
When asked, is $10,000 enough? McCrea said, "Of course it's not enough, but it's a start."
The SGA officers plan to get students to donate by simply asking them to drop their $2.08 donation off at the SGA office in the student center.
Also they will be asking for and taking student donations at any and every event held on-campus. The SGA plans to involve the alumni by collecting donations at football games.
