What started off as a normal Wednesday morning turned out to be a trying day for administrators of the Department of Student Life when they discovered that two flat screen televisions were missing from the game room of the K.W. Green Student Center.
Later that day, a campus wide network failure left students, faculty and staff without internet, e-mail and Card One access for approximately five hours (according to user reports.)
The day ended with the assault of two Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College students who were playing pool in the game room of the Student Center.
"4-5 dudes just jumped this guy," said Senior Digital Media Major, Jamel Jackson who playing ping pong in the game room at the time of the event which occurred between 6:45 to 6:55 p.m.
On his first day supervising the facility, SC State's Golf Coach, Herman Belton, walked in on one of the two incidents in which students were assaulted.
"I came in and saw one of the young men on the floor with a group of men attacking him," said Belton
The perpetrators fled the scene upon his [Belton's] arrival.
Belton was given the added responsibility of the Student Center, because budget cuts resulted in the non-renewal of the part-time employee who previously supervised the facility.
According to Belton, the victims were familiar with the perpetrators, but declined to disclose their [the perpetrator's] identities.
Paramedics were called in to take one of the victims who had a swollen eye to the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.
No charges have been pressed with SC State's Campus Police, and no further information about the assaulted students was available.
Campus Police Chief Gregory Harris, is calling on students to work together with law enforcement to prevent crime from happening on campus.
The Police Chief said that in light of budget constraints, it is unlikely that any further security measures can be implemented at the Student Center.
