Johnson Earns MEAC Player of the Week Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., February 2, 2009 - South Carolina State's Jason Johnson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Johnson (C/F, 6-7, 220, Sr., Bronx, NY) led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 mark last week in conference match-ups against North Carolina A&T (71-53) and Bethune-Cookman (59-51). He posted double-doubles in both games and averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds. The conference's field-goal percentage leader (.671) shot over 53-percent in the two games. He also recorded five blocks, three steals and two assists to help SCSU win only their second back-to-back games of the season to improve to 8-11 and 3-4 in the league. The Bulldogs played at Florida A&M Monday night.

Michael Harper of Coppin State was selected as the Rookie of the Week while Norfolk State's Brandon Monroe was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Harper (G, 6-3, 195, Fr., Milwaukee, Wis.) averaged 18.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots and 1.5 steals to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week. Against Delaware State Harper scored 21 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-9 from long range. He also recorded 16 points, shooting 6-of-11, against Howard.

Monroe (F, 6-7, 215, Jr., Raeford, N.C.) grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds in the Spartans 69-51 win over Winston-Salem State. He also added two blocked shots in the victory. For the week Monroe tallied 23 rebounds and three blocked shots. He also notched 14 points on the offensive end of the court.
