Tax season is upon us once again. It's that time of the year when Uncle Sam wants to ensure that he got all his, and taxpayers want to ensure that you get all theirs back in return.

The I.R.S. principally oversees this process, so whether you use TurboTax yourself or go to an agency, now is the time to get cranking on your taxes.

Here are some important dates for you to remember:

(1) January 15, 2009 - Deadline to pay your fourth quarter 2008 estimated tax
payment. However, if you file your
return and pay your balance in full by
February 2, 2009, then you can skip this
estimated payment without penalty.

(2) January 31, 2009 - Deadline for
employers to mail out Form W-2 and
for payers to furnish Form 1099 statements to payees.

(3) April 15, 2009 - Deadline to file individual tax returns (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) or to request an Automatic Extension (Form 4868). An extension provides an extra six months to file your return. Payment of the tax is still due by April 15th. You can submit payment for tax along with the extension form.

College students, please note that scholarship awards are considered as income. This information is shown on the 1098T forms that were recently mailed to you.

Also note that South Carolina State University provides Free Tax Preparation assistance by Certified Community Volunteers in the Algernon Belcher Hall. These volounteers will be available on the dates and times noted below:

(1) Saturday Feb 14. and Saturday Feb 28 from 10a.m. to 2p.m.

(2) Saturday March 14 and Saturday March 28. from 10am to 2pm

(3) Saturday April 11. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
