The Student Government Association (SGA) has a new face. Zachary Middleton and Tymon Graham captured the top positions; president and vice president respectively by slim margins in a record voter turnout.
The results were announced on Friday 17, after an initial announcement that the votes were compromised. Election board chair, Marvis President explained that the votes were recounted for accuracy and then made available to students.
The president-elect's cabinet also includes Anthony Beckett as business Manager, Kirsten Nash as corresponding secretary, Shenita Jackson as recording secretary and Chassidy Hinton as senator at large.
Middleton says he feels blessed that students gave him the opportunity to represent them, and says he hopes to bridge the gap between the student body and administration.
Similarly, Graham who has been a member of the SGA, serving in the Campus Activities Board (CAB) said he was overjoyed when he
heard the results. "I knew at that point that the work that I have spoken about as well as what I said in my speech would finally be put in place ," he said. "I will forever remain humble and grateful to the student body."
Graham said he chose to run for vice president as opposed to president, because the vice president serves as the President Pro Tempore of the Student Senate. "I really want to concentrate on improving legislation with the Student Government Association as well as other campus organizations. I have worked with the SGA for three years and this improvement is long overdue."
Middleton is also a Full Back in SC State's football team, the founder and president of the non profit organization Changing the Perception Inc.,and an Honors Program Member. When asked how he plans to juggle all of his responsibilities, Middleton said he would do it with a lot of prayer and planning. "I also have a very capable staff that will be at the forefront of every policy, event and initiative that we would like to incorporate next year." The president-elect said that although he has not had the opportunity to get to know his cabinet in depth, their reputations precede them."Everywhere I go I hear Tymon did this, Shenita or Anthony did that, so I know that they will really do a great job helping me to juggle all of those activities."
Inspiration for his decision to run for office, also came from Middleton's late uncle, Delano Middleton, who was one of the three students killed in the Orangeburg Massacre in 1968. He said, "I have seen the pictures of my uncle and of all the victims killed that night and all I can think is, lost potential. From all of the stories that I have heard about him I know that he was a man of faith, I know that he was hardworking, and that he loved the campus of SC State, all qualities that I feel I posses. I think I can fulfill the legacy that he was never given the opportunity to complete."
