Michael Bartley, interim police chief of the SC State University Police Department, is implementing the "Chat with the Chief" initiative. "I want it to be an open forum," states Bartley. "We can have open dialogue about certain topics like crime trends and crime prevention," notes Bartley.

Valerie Fields, interim vice president of Student Affairs, agrees and gives additional incentives to encourage the University family to get involved with this endeavor. "Chat with the Chief will afford all students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Orangeburg community and beyond the opportunity to voice any concerns regarding safety and security on our campus," says Fields.

Bartley says that some safety steps that we could take are rudimentary, but are not always adhered to. "Your laptop may have been stolen because you didn't take the time to be mindful of crime techniques that you can use or something you could have employed as simple as locking your door when you leave your room," states Bartley. Leaving a cd player or XM radio on the seat of your car is also enticing to a criminal.

"Chat with the Chief" will include Chief Bartley and other officials from the SC State University Police Department. According to Fields, "interim Chief Bartley will expound upon the implementation of programs and services that will assist in providing a safe environment for SC State." These services include crime prevention tips, identity theft, and more safety issues that will prevent you from becoming a victim. "This program will make students more aware and will create a partnership between the University family and the University police department," states Bartley.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend "Chat with the Chief." Starting Wednesday, June 17, 2009, "Chat with the Chief" will take place every first and third Wednesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Garnet and Blue Room of the K.W. Green Student Center.

One of the many initiatives that Bartley is enforcing on the campus, "Chat with the Chief" will also fulfill the police department's new motto~meeting the challenge to make a positive difference. "When you believe customer service should be excellent, then you've got 50 percent of the battle won," states Bartley. "We'll meet any challenge, and hopefully through these open forums, we can make a difference in some of the things that happen here on our campus," he continued.
