New Vice President for Academic Affairs Announced

"We are excited to have Dr. Blackwell join the University's administration as Vice President for Academic Affairs," said Dr. George E. Cooper. "Her academic experience and background will be an asset and we look forward to her tenure here at SC State," he continued.
"I too am excited about joining an Institution with such a long and storied history," said Blackwell. "I look forward to working with SC State's faculty, staff, and students as we continue to build on the University's solid academic foundation," she continued.
As the vice president for Academic Affairs, Blackwell will be responsible for all academic affairs related to undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs. She will also take the lead in enhancing existing, nationally-recognized academic programs and in guiding the development of new degree offering.
Prior to coming to SC State, Blackwell served as the vice president for academic affairs at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C. Her responsibilities were organized into the following categories: faculty governance and office management; curriculum and program development; faculty matters, student matters, communication with external publics; financial and facilities management; data management; and, institutional support.
She received a bachelor's degree in history and education from North Carolina Central University; a master's degree in history and education from North Carolina Central University; and a terminal degree in women's history and African American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Blackwell has published several articles and is the author of the pioneer study, No Peace without Freedom: Race and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, 1915-1970.
Dr. Blackwell's major accomplishments at Saint Augustine's College include the following:
• Establishing a satellite campus for adult learners between the ages of 23 and 65. The one year old program currently has students who are pursing degrees in criminal justice or business organizational management;
• Adding new majors: social work; public policy; pre-law; Africana studies; women's history; international studies; Christian ministry; Forensic Biology; and liberal studies;
• Adding new programs: Honors College; Study Abroad and International Education; and Undergraduate Research;
• Creating, within the Division of Social Sciences, a pilot program, with special faculty who taught their respective disciplines to underachieving students in an effort to improve their time to degree completion rate;
• Establishing the Center for Academic Excellence;
• Creating the Journal of Interdisciplinary Research, which provided opportunities for faculty to publish;
• Creating committees to focus on and improve faculty and student retention;
• Providing oversight for the adhoc committee charged with redesigning the first and second year curriculum in an effort to retain students;
• Establishing a partnership between Saint Augustine's College and the University of the Western Cape and the University of Zululand in South Africa.
Dr. Blackwell's academic experiences also include serving as interim associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at Fayetteville State University; dean for the Division of Social Sciences at Saint Augustine's College; and chairperson for the Department of History, Government and Public Policy also at Saint Augustine's College.
A tenured professor of history, Dr. Blackwell was founder and director of the Women's Studies Program at Meredith College.
