This theme was created to encourage SC State students to break away from the level of mediocrity, that some of us have become accustomed to, and believe in achieving greatness. In the meeting many new initiatives were introduced, as well as introductions and re-introductions of committees.
The South Carolina State University SGA and Campus Activities Board (CAB) are working together to include the entire campus on various projects. Among those projects is the "Code of Character" challenge which encourages students a chance to let their character be shown, in a positive way. There will be an award given every month to the student that exemplifies the character word of the month best. Also, in an effort to help out financially, there will be collaboration between SGA and the SCSU Bookstore to sell "Believer" T-shirts and Bumper Stickers. The proceeds from the "Believer" project will go to various scholarship funds. There will also be a Bulldog Discount Card available soon for students, to purchase items from some businesses that sponsor SC State.
CAB's theme for this year is; "The True Spirit of SC State". In an effort to get everyone involved in various activities CAB will launch the back to school week on Sunday, September 13, 2009 and it will end on Friday, September 18, 2009. On Sunday there will be a gospel concert, Monday the Save a Life Tour with the D.U.I. simulator, Tuesday night will be Karaoke Night, Wednesday Bulldog Poetry night, Thursday a Meet & Greet Social in the Student Center, and Friday there will be a Block Party (Bucking on Buckley). For further information on those events contact the Campus Activities Board.
While everyone was waiting for the announcement of the Freshman Class of 2013's officers, there was a question and answer segment in which students voiced their concerns. Among the questions answered was the concern about university parking, an issue that many students can relate to. One student even indicated that she has to "fight" for a parking spot. In response, Business Manager, Anthony Beckett explained that the reason for that is, SC State is in the process of transitioning into a pedestrian campus that involves restricting access from the area that stretches from the Residence halls to Crawford Zimmerman.
"So when the refund checks coming out?" was the question of an anonymous meeting attendee. This, again, was something that many inquiring minds wanted to know. According to the SGA, refund checks will be out on the 21 of September.
After the question and answer portion of the evening the Freshman Class Officers where announced and introduced, then the meeting was adjourned. This meeting, over-all, was very informative and urges students to get involved in the new initiatives and committees.
